Occupational Health and Safety in the Media, TV & Film industry

Film Set Scene

Smartrad Creative is working with productions to ensure training, and regulations are protecting workers across film sets, TV productions, and the wider entertainment industry.

If you are a medium/large/small company or even a one man band, you may want to seek advice or help from someone with more experience
Note that for small-scale productions in low-risk situations, eg those involving small crews and where there is no opportunity to scout the location(s), it may be appropriate to finalise the assessment on the ground. The production company/producer must ensure that crew working on this style of production have the necessary competence to perform risk assessment and implement effective controls.

When filming, people have many things on their minds, things can get rushed, and risks can increase.

Even simple things can become dangerous because this is not an ordinary situation.

Of course, all of life presents hazards, but if someone is asked to run down a hill repeatedly to get the scene 'in the can' - for example, the risk of them tripping and falling on their face is increased with each time they do this.

How can film production companies ensure the safety of their crew and cast?

Film production companies can ensure the safety of their crew and cast by implementing comprehensive safety protocols that are tailored to the specific needs of each project. This includes conducting thorough risk assessments before filming begins, identifying potential hazards on set, and creating detailed safety plans. Regular safety briefings and training sessions should be held to keep everyone informed about emergency procedures and the proper use of equipment. By fostering a culture of safety, companies can empower crew members to speak up about safety concerns without fear of repercussions.

We work with producers, Creatives, script editors and content directors to evaluate the potential risks in a forthcoming story to be filmed. Be it a simple stunt or a complicated full action stunt all elements should be planned correctly and risk amalysis undertaken to prove the action is viable and mitigated.
